NewWelcoming Congregation Progress Report We are on our way towards becoming an official Welcoming Congregation! Thank you to all of our members who led workshops and gave presentations that served to educate the congregation on the history and issues important to the LGBT community. A congregational vote was held on December 11th and it was unanimously agreed to complete the Welcoming Congregation program and apply for official status.
NewGeneral Assembly in Phoenix, Arizona: June 20-24, 2012 General Assembly (GA) 2012 will be a gathering with multiple ways of engaging in justice work for people of all ages. Joining with the people of Arizona, we will worship, witness, learn and work together. We will leave General Assembly grounded in our faith, energized for justice and with resources to bring this work home to our congregations. The UUCC will be acknowledged this year as a new member in the UUA so we are especially hoping for a good turnout from our congregation!
UUCC graduates from status as Emerging Congregation At last! After hovering at 27-28 members for the last several months , Membership Chair Judy Butler reports that three new members have committed to joining our congregation, bringing our total to 30 members. That's the magic number and will allow us to apply for membership as a fully certified UUA congregation. After we send in the necessary paperwork and fees, our application goes to the UUA board for approval. Congratulations to Judy and to everyone in our congregation, whose efforts have made this growth possible. It was less than three years ago that we performed our first service at Dolores' house.
UUCC Clubs - Everyone welcome! Garden Group - We have two plots at the Pocahontas Community Gardens located at the intersection of Wilton and Burton. Our group assists with the maintenance of the community garden, comes together socially with other local gardeners and works together to improve our gardening skills. The Unitarian Universalist Community of Cambria has donated $2,500 to the Cambria Headstart Program for the Raising a Reader Program. Raising A Reader is a nationally recognized early childhood literacy program. This program promotes early literacy and school readiness for children ages 0 - 5 from low income families in our community. Many of these families also struggle with adult literacy issues. The Raising A Reader program is a family behavior modification program with a key element being that parents are taught the skills they need to be able to read with their child. With the UUCC contribution, book bags will be filled with English and Spanish language books for parents to read to their children. And we as UUCC members can volunteer at the Cambria Headstart site to read to the enrolled children. UUCC members making the award presentation are Margaret Randall, Judy Butler and Patricia Harris-Lakin.
Electronic Recycling, Cambria Farmers Market: Last Friday of the Month - Drop off items between 2:30-5:00PM (TVs, Stereos, Computers, Cell Phones - No appliances or anything that heats or cools). We can use need help moving items from peoples' cars to the hauling truck or by working the UUCC table and talking to people about the Recycling Program or the UUCC - 2:00-5:00PM. Or help transport and unload collected items at Morro Bay the following Saturday. If you can help call Gil at 927-9556. (for more info click here or check the calendar for current dates)
UUCC Choir Practice- Thursday @ 7PM, 2400 Burton Drive, Cambria (Except the second week of the month, 7PM on Friday). Come join our Music Director, Mary Schwalbe and the enthusiastic choir singers. We practice UU hymns and other beautiful and inspiring songs that Mary arranges for the choir to sing on Sunday mornings. Great voice and prior choir experience, not necessary, just enthusiasm and commitment to sing in the choir. Call Mary Schwalbe with questions 927-5003.
Putting our values to Work - Starting with the February 27 collection, UUCC will use the money from our last-Sunday-of-the-month offering to support a local charitable cause. The February collection was donated to the Homeless Animal Rescue Team to help with emergency medical needs for their long term residents. The collections from March and April have gone to Cambria's Anonymous Neighbors towards their support of the local Food Bank. May and June collections were donated to the Friends of the Cambria Library. We will be collecting donations for the Friends of the Fiscalini Ranch starting with the July 31 collection. Greenspace will receive donations collected during the last quarter of this year. Thank you all for making this program a success with your generous support of the 4th Sunday special collections.
